  • Fixed WipeCMOS false virus alert. Thanks to JJJ for reporting this.
  • Fixed startup.bat bug for Partition Resizer. Thanks to David Morse for reporting this.
  • Fixed offline documentation bug for INSERT. Thanks to Charles Appel for helping with this.
  • Updated F-Prot to V3.16a. Thanks to various people who notified me about this. The virus signatures has also been updated to 16 Jan 2005.
  • Added Added Avast! V7.7 for DOS. Thanks to Stefano for the suggestion.
  • Added AntiVir Personal Edition V6.29.0.5. Thanks to Stefano for the suggestion.
  • Updated UniFlash to V1.38. Thanks to SebastienG for the update.
  • Updated NwDsk boot disk to V3.22. Thanks to Erwin for the update.
  • Updated FreeDOS boot disk to V3.22. Thanks to Erwin for the update.

    • USB detection now defaults to no to avoid locking up incompatible machines.
    • There is now an UBCD.BAT in A:\Bin that holds the batch-file for UBCD handling. The displayed text is in UBCD.TXT in A:\Etc. This way it is now possible for the end-user to re-enter the menu by running UBCD from the prompt.

  • Updated MSRRC boot disk to V3.22. Thanks to Erwin for the update.

Fdmsrrc now contains the freeware Client version of Remote Recover. Just install the freeware (limited to read-only) or buyware Server version and you are able to mount remote drives (FAT/FAT32/NTFS) with Remote Recover (RRC). Next to that you will still be able to use this image to connect to Microsoft Shares or to create Microsoft Shares to be accessed from other machines. It carries 30 drivers now. Whatever you choose in the MsNet-dialog, you can always lauch RRC additionally (just type "rrc").

  • Updated Arachne to V1.79. Thanks to Erwin for the update.
  • Updated DBAN to V1.04. Thanks to Stefano for the update.
  • Updated Offline NT Password & Registry Editor to 041205. Thanks to SebastienG for the update.
  • Updated NSSI to V0.58.6. Thanks to SebastienG for the update.
  • Updated DOS Navigator to V4.9.0. Thanks to SebastienG for the update.
  • Updated BIOS to V1.35.1. Thanks to SebastienG for the update.
  • Updated ATAINF to V1.3m. Thanks to SebastienG for the update.
  • Added MHDD32 V4.0. Thanks to Jordan Plamen for the update.

Note: To use this program, you need to read the last paragraph in MHDD_EN.rtf in the docs directory to figure out how to compute the activation code. The program is free though. The intention of the activation code is to "encourage" users to read the documentation first. :-)

  • Updated XXCOPY to V2.85.9. Thanks to SebastienG for the update.
  • Updated PCI's pcidevs.txt to 21-Nov-2004 edition. Thanks to Jambin for the update.
  • Added Ontrack Data Advisor V5.0 Free Edition.
  • Added XOSL V1.1.5. Thanks to Maro for his enthusiastic suggestion.

I find it almost inexcusable that XOSL is not included in the UBCD distribution! ;-) It's my personal favourite boot manager, unbeaten in visual appearance and user-friendliness. Suddenly it's a dead project, but their last release still works great. It requires a FAT partition to install, but the setup/restore tool is a big plus (makes it easy to recover the boot manager without reinstallation whenever Windows setup wiped the MBR).

The 1.1.5 version reincludes SmartBootManager and Ranish, but I don't think that hurts anyone, even if these tools should already have five dups on the UniversalBootCD.

  • Updated McAfeee virus signatures to 12 Jan 2005.

Dec 3, 2004

  • Updated Partition Saving to V2.91. Thanks to SebastienG for the update.
  • Added MSRRC (Bart's Network Disk on FreeDOS) V3.18. Thanks to Erwin Veermans for the contribution.

RRC means Remote Recover by Winternals (commercial). Fdmsrrc is prepared to handle RRC. End-user may just add his rrcdos.exe to A:\Bin on the image to use this. Otherwise it will just print a text about RRC. (there is no commercial stuff added; end-user might want to do that)

  • Updated NwDsk to V3.18. Thanks to Erwin Veermans for the update.

    • Kernel and memory managers have been updated.
    • Also a new version of SHSUCDX (for CDROM -reading) has been added.
    • I decreased all timed dialogs from 5 to 3 secs and I skipped a few that were not really needed.
    • Also a new UDMA-driver was added (for fast HD access).

  • Updated FreeDOS boot image. Thanks to Erwin Veermans for the update.

The FreeDOS boot disk now displays a text before launching the selected App. The end-user may opt to quit here (no App, just dos-prompt), to browse (no App, but launch VC on CDROM-drive), or launch the App (default choice). The text is in A:\Etc\Ubcdinfo.txt. Replace it with your own (or edit it). The timeout can be set in A:\Global.set by "UBCD_TI=20" (for 20secs reading).

Nov 3, 2004

3.0

  • This version of UBCD uses CDShell V2.0.11 and BCDW V1.50z.
  • Added INSERT for UBCD. Thanks to Charles Appel for his contribution.

UBCD Insert is intended for the advanced user that is already familiar with Linux and preferably Knoppix. It is enhanced with modules to allow us to provide you with additional software not part of the base distribution. All that you need to do is download a module from Sourceforge, add it to your /INSERT directory, burn and you're ready to go.

If you intend to use INSERT, please take some time to reviews its documentation first.

  • Use freedos.img to launch supporting DOS applications via BCDW parameter. The reduces the number of DOS images to be supported, aggregates updates and patches, and improves maintainability. Thanks to Erwin Veermans for contributing the FreeDOS image.
  • Added PTS DiskEditor V1.04. Thanks to Valden Longhurst for the suggestion.
  • Added NwDsk (NetWare Boot Disk). Thanks to Erwin Veermans for providing the boot image.

Here's a list of what this boot disk can do:

    • USB drive/cdroms autoinstalled
    • UDMA autoinstalled
    • CDROM (atapi) autoinstalled
    • international Keyboard support
    • PartMan (ranish), BootPart, Aefdisk on board.
    • Linux EXT2 supported
    • LFN supported (Doslfn)
    • Dos VNCviewer on board
    • IP-Print Server (LPD) on board
    • Volkov Commander on board
    • many utils on board

This diskette can also just serve as a plug'n play packet-driver layer for the non-Netware-minded for running WATTCP services like the included IP-printserver and VNCViewer. Other people use it in combination with Citrix DOS-ICA client to turn your old 486 PC into a XP workstation (connecting to Citrix MetaFrame).

  • Added Arachne boot image with built-in network driver support. Thanks to Erwin Veermans for providing the boot image.

    Message from Erwin:

When your NIC is not autodetected run WHAT1632 on the diskette (included) and email me the name(s) of the 16-bit drivers you need (or check on my site for driver downloads).

When your NIC is detected and you have a DHCP server in your LAN you need not to do anything until it autolaunches Arachne's setup. Choose packet-driver and DHCP and start browsing.

After quiting Arachne just restart it with "arachne".

  • All images loaded with memdisk are now compressed with gzip. To modify an image compressed with gzip, you need to unzip it first. The application you use to extract the image itself (after you've unzipped it) may not be able to read the file unless you change the extension, so you may have to rename the file to include the .img extension. Once your finished modifying the image you should zip it with the following command (or equivalent) 'gzip -9 image.img', then rename to match it's original name (e.g. image.gz).

  • Added DELCMOS to the DOSAPPS directory. Thanks to Andre Tertling for contributing this.
  • Apart from the BIOS password cracker (which didn't work for my computers, doh), I'm missing a tool to zap the CMOS RAM. I wrote such a little cutey ages ago and would like to contribute it to the collection. It just needs a plain DOS environment because it requires free access to port registers (that's why it works in Win9x but not in NT/2K/XP) to wipe the CMOS RAM content.

    Short instruction:

    • Boot plain DOS (HIMEM.SYS won't do any harm)
    • Run program
    • Answer the safety question ("Are you sure?")
    • Reboot your computer
    • Go to the BIOS setup
    • Load the BIOS defaults (important!)
    • Reset ESCD data (in most cases it's called "Reset configuration" in the PCI setup, alternatives are "Clear NVRAM" and similar options)

    • Reboot

2.21

  • Fixed a couple of errors in cdshell.ini. Thanks to SebastienG for spotting them.
  • Fixed EditBINI. Thanks to Jeremy for first alerting me to the problem.
  • Adrian Stanciu suggested that the size of the final ISO could be decreased by zeroing all the unused bytes. Well, I couldn't follow his instructions exactly since he runs Linux, but I was able to do it for some of the disk images under Windows by writing a simple C program and working on images that I could mount using VFD. The result was quite satisfactory. It managed to shave a couple of megabytes off the final 7z archive.
  • Switched to self-extracting archive of ISO image.

Mar 11, 2004

More space used on the floppy but I loaded the files I could into the Linux file system image inside. Theres still space for users to install packages onto the settings + package floppy and its pretty easy to do. Some info about installing modules (ie drivers) from the Freesco image: If you boot the Freesco image you will find the modules (ie drivers) under /lib/modules and below. You can copy the drivers you need like so: cp /lib/modules/nic/eepro100.gz /mnt/bootdev/router/drv. You may want to use pci_scan.gz and/or isa_scan.gz to detect plug-and-play devices like your network card(s). They are also under /lib/modules. Oct 19, 2003

1.7

  • There was a bug in the login script so that the system will not automatically boot the first harddisk after 300 seconds of inactivity. This has been fixed. Thanks to Troy from Australia for supplying the fix, and a few others for reporting the problem. I have also added a short note to remind people that the CD will automatically boot the first harddisk. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to add some sort of countdown timer, which would have been really cool.
  • Added FAQ and documentation, AUTORUN.INF to automatically launch the documentation on Windows systems, and added an icon for the CD. All this would not have been possible without the painstaking effort of Scott D. Wares. The credit is totally his. Thank you!
  • Added BasicLinux, thanks again to Scott D. Wares. He is unofficially the resident Linux guru now. :-)
  • Added Gujin, as recommended by Scott D. Wares.
  • Added Freesco, as recommended by Scott D. Wares. In his own words, "I have added all the modules from the modules package from the Freesco site... smbfs, and many network cards. This will allow you to use one machine to connect to the Internet and share the connection with all other computers in the local network. I'd use this to connect a networked office w/o shared Internet to the Internet so I could apply security updates to all the machines in the office quickly. I could also use it as a demo tool when doing proposals or to quickly restore Internet access to a office when there main Internet access server is down for repairs." He also said: "Your settings and extra software packages are stored on a DOS-formatted floppy. This can be the same disk you save your basic Linux internet and mail settings on... The small zip file I added under tools on the UBCD... these files should be copied to a DOS-formatted floppy. After the UBCD menu comes up, just insert the floppy and select Freesco."
  • Updated F-Prot virus definition files to the most recent.

Sep 22, 2003

1.6

  • I missed out the key mappings for booting from the floppy drive and hard disk. Thanks to Guillaume to alerting me and contributing the code to fix the oversight!
  • P J Wooledge contributed his version of F-Prot boot disk which expands into a ramdisk upon bootup. This allows the full F-Prot to work from UBCD (previously macro virus definitions were been disabled so that everything can fit onto a 2.88MB virtual floppy boot image). Thanks!
  • Added SPFDISK (Special FDISK). Thanks to P J Wooledge again for the tip!

Sep 8, 2003

1.5

  • Updated to the Boot Scriptor environment. It provides a nice scripting environment with two ways of booting disk images (MemDisk and DiskEmu), and makes it real easy to create a color startup menu.

Aug 24, 2003

1.4

  • Added Windows Memory Diagnostic. I still have problems getting this to work, but Michelangelo confirms it works for his system, so I am adding this in first. If there are enough complaints, I will remove it later.
  • Previously, F-Prot only works on FAT16 partition. I created a Win98 boot floppy using BFD, and threw in the read-only freeware version of NTFSDOS, so now F-Prot should work with FAT32 and NTFS partitions as well.
  • Added XFDISK. Thanks to Michelangelo for the tip.
  • Updated to DFT Ver 3.50. Thanks to Jeremy Stanton for the tip.
